Every MCU Disney+ Series (So Far), Ranked By Rewatchability

disney-series-0

Thanks to their engaging character work, colorful action sequences, and abundance of Easter eggs, most of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe hold up to countless rewatches. But, in terms of rewatchability, the MCU’s recent Disney+ shows are a different story.

Episodic television series are inherently less rewatchable than movies, because the writers are burdened with dragging out their storylines week after week. WandaVision’s sitcomland mystery can be revisited a bunch of times, whereas The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s generic action and inconsistent storytelling warrant fewer returns.

The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

disney-series-1

After WandaVision provided a delightful breath of fresh air, the MCU’s next streaming series went another way. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a more or less straightforward action series. Its “buddy cop” premise was promising – and Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan share fantastic chemistry as always – but the series is let down by mediocre storytelling. Sam and Bucky don’t even meet in the first episode. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s slow-paced narrative established an irritating trend in MCU shows: they tend to take too long to set things up, then resolve it all too quickly in the finale.

There are some highlights in the series, like poignant, politically charged elements taken from Truth: Red, White & Black. Played by a brilliantly smarmy Wyatt Russell, John Walker made for a fantastic villain, but he gets a rushed, unearned redemption in the finale.

What If…?

disney-series-2

The MCU’s first animated series, What If…?, is an anthology series following hypothetical scenarios deviating from familiar Marvel storylines (although, as the multiverse has expanded, they don’t seem to be so hypothetical anymore). Jeffrey Wright provides hypnotic voiceover narration as the all-seeing, all-knowing Watcher. Most episodes of What If…? provide at least one interesting Avenger variant to come back to, like Captain Carter or Star-Lord T’Challa.

Like most anthology series, What If…? is very hit-and-miss. Standout episodes like “What If… Zombies?!” and “What If… Ultron Won?” can be watched on their own, while mediocre ones like “What If… Thor Were an Only Child?” don’t need to be viewed a second time. Unlike most anthology series, the season 1 finale pulls all the episodes together with a climactic payoff, as the Watcher assembles the “Guardians of the Multiverse” to battle Infinity Ultron.

Moon Knight

disney-series-3

Oscar Isaac gave one of the most memorable MCU performances to date as the title character in Moon Knight. He plays three separate personalities within the same mind and also plays the Egyptian deity that uses his body as an avatar to kick supernatural butt. There are some generic episodes of Moon Knight, but there are also a couple of standout episodes that lean into the psychological elements of the story.

After the fourth episode pulls the rug out from under the audience with a mind-blowing twist, the fifth episode pays it off with a deep dive into Marc Spector’s fractured psyche. Not every Moon Knight episode is as great as “Asylum,” but “Asylum” is one of the greatest MCU things ever made.

Loki

disney-series-4

Picking up after the trickster god disappeared with the Space Stone in Avengers: Endgame, Loki has a wonderfully zany sci-fi procedural premise: a buddy cop duo journeys across the space-time continuum to clean up corrupted timelines. Owen Wilson makes a great deadpan foil for Tom Hiddleston as a TVA bureaucrat. There are some uneventful episodes in Loki’s run, but the series is redeemed by a few exciting twists. Loki and Sylvie’s flirtations are endlessly watchable.

The fifth episode, “Journey Into Mystery,” is a thrilling, action-packed climax for season 1. The finale episode’s “He Who Remains” reveal throws all the show’s ongoing story threads out of the window in favor of setting up the MCU’s next big bad, but Jonathan Majors is an undeniably mesmerizing screen presence.

Hawkeye

disney-series-5

Since it’s set in the week leading up to Christmas, Hawkeye might just warrant a rewatch around the holidays. Audiences tend not to rewatch Elf or Home Alone in the middle of the year. Still, Hawkeye will hold up every year when the holidays come around.

It’s a festive, lighthearted superhero adventure with riveting action sequences and endearing chemistry between Jeremy Renner as a grizzled veteran Avenger and Hailee Steinfeld as his budding mentee, Kate Bishop. There’s another mystery villain reveal with the Kingpin, but that’s paid off spectacularly when Kate singlehandedly defeats the notorious crime boss in hand-to-hand combat.

WandaVision

disney-series-6

Unlike all the MCU streaming series that followed it, WandaVision was designed to be watched more than once. It starts off as a traditional black-and-white sitcom, but there’s an unsettling Twin Peaks-ian mystery underneath it all. Rewatchers can follow all the hints and foreshadowing as an entire town’s residents find themselves under the spell of a grieving Wanda Maximoff. By the end of the series, Marvel is back in standard superhero adventure mode, but Jac Schaeffer and the writers did a terrific job of building to the genre switch.

Elizabeth Olsen brought more depth to Wanda than ever before, turning her from one of the most forgettable Avengers into one of the most beloved, while Kathryn Hahn gives one of the greatest MCU villain turns as Agatha Harkness.
